909 Day. September 9th.
11:15 pm
Heading home. The guys have been out for a long while, but I was finally “in the zone” working so I stayed until I hit a logical place for a break. Bubba got up once to pee, then went straight back to bed. There won’t be any second wind play time tonight.
9 pm
Bubba had his first real coughing fit of the day. He had had 3 coughing episodes during the day, but they were all the same. Each was just one “burst”, where they usually come in groups. They were also dry, not the bubbly-wet coughs. This one went on for a few minutes, more than 5 bursts, but fewer than 10. And when he was done, he went to have some dinner.
One dinner bowl was done. The second bowl was nearly full, until Bubba destroyed it.
Buddy had been up on the back of the couch, licking his arm for the last hour. He’s a bit funky. The trip to the Groomer on Friday will be much-needed.
Evening catching-up.
It’s been a quiet day, as expected. It got very hot – for Dana Point – and the humidity is awful. The guys have spent most of the day asleep.
We started out with an immediate walk. The guys were both up when I showed up and we went right out. It was a very short walk, through the memorial and half way to the center sitting area at the park before Bubba decided that was far enough. Buddy pooped twice, Bubba didn’t.
Buddy wanted out again a few hours later for a quick bathroom break.
At around 1, with the guys both sleeping, I hitched a ride to Costco and the post office. I had spaced out picking up the chicken on Tuesday – I blame the holiday for throwing me off. So we grabbed a quickie lunch at the Costco snack bar, picked up two chickens and stopped at the Capo Beach post office.
When I got back, Buddy was woken by the key and jumped up to come bark ferociously at the door. That, of course, set off Bubba who preferred to guard the entry from the back of the couch. He’s no fool – a burglar won’t be nice enough to help him back up. When it was just me that walked in, Bubba shot me a, “oh, just you? I woke up for nothing” look and went back to sleep. Buddy’s eyes told me that he’d been shaken out of a pretty deep sleep to come protect the homestead from the raiding marauders.
We did dinner at 4:30, without cheese. Bubba seemed to be expecting cheese. He checked one bowl, then moved over to the second bowl without eating from the first. Then he searched around the second bowl for half a minute, before finally deciding to give in and just have meat for dinner.
After dinner, I settled in to work, and the guys had fun playing “sit by the door until Mark gets up to get leashes, then run”. I kept telling them that they weren’t going to fool me anymore – but they seem to know it’s my job to take them out whenever they want, so they ignored my threat.
